My Promotion

Good news today. So, I believe that I have already spoken about my job and all that it entails (including getting up at 4 in the morning). Today something wonderful happened. My boss, or supervisor as I like to refer to him, asked me to be the head student next semester! Now, the seemingly trivial title of my new position may throw you off, but let me explain my new role. Basically, I am the boss if the real bosses are gone. If both of them happen to get sick or something on the same day, then it is up to me to ensure that the whole building gets clean, otherwise, who knows what might happen? Things would revert back to a state of nature idea, where there was no government and as political philolosopher Thomas Hobbes put it, life would be "solitary, nasty, brutish, and short." As the head student, I will make sure that that does not occur. I don't mean to make light of my promotion, it is actually really exciting. It just shows that I am the most responsible, most puncutal, hardest working, nicest, and most beautiful out of all my coworkers, which I have firmly believed all along. Now I just have to wait until my supervisors are gone in order to exercise my new powers.

My Job

I have a wonderful job cleaning the chemistry building on campus. I wash the windows and vacuum, and have even gotten emotionally close enough to my vaccuum to name it Eugene. The sense of satisfaction from making the building look beautiful is well worth the effort. And oh yeah, my job starts at 4:00 IN THE MORNING. Thats right, 4 in the a.m., when it is still dark outside and many of my roommates have not even gone to bed, I awake to walk the several blocks in the freezing cold to wash windows. Let me tell you what it looks like at 4 in the morning, because many people have never and will never see it. It looks cold and dark, and that's about it. I usually go to bed at about 11 at night, so that means that I have gone the whole semester getting less than 5 hours of sleep every night. Let me sum up. I go to work at 4 IN THE MORNING. My roommate Becky feels sick just thinking about getting up at that hour everyday. Becky believes it is a superpower and that only those chosen are bestowed with this special gift. But I know that truth. I am actually from another planet where sleep is not required. Just kidding. I do not know how I am able to accomplish this amazing feat and perhaps I never will. But if you are stronger than Becky and able to get up in the early hours of the morning, I encourage you to do so one day, just so you are able to stand proudly in the elite group of those of us who have risen when it is still dark.

another reason why i love BYU

As I mentioned earlier, my external hard drive had a little retard moment as it fell over (very softly I might add) onto the carpet. The very big deal about this is that I have all of my cousin's wedding pictures on it, so I NEED to recover the info. I called the company to see about their recovery program and how much it would be. The lady on the phone said I could get a free estimate and that shipping would be free for them to look at it. As she continues to help me fill out some paperwork online, she says, "oh, have I given you your estimate?". Um no lady, I thought that's what all the paperwork was for. So she tells me it's going to be anywhere from $1,000-1,900 to fix! WHAT??!! Holy crap. That was for the 'fast fixings' so I asked how much it would be if it took longer. And it would still be anywhere from $750-1,500.

There was no way I was going to pay that much. So I got off the phone and took it over to Best Buy. After I explained that the computer would not recognize my hard drive to the 'geek squad', they took it back to try it on one of their computers and what do you know...the geek says, "yeah, our computers aren't recognizing that anything is plugged in". Oh really?!! They told me it would be $60.00 to ship it to their lab, but that that money would also be used toward fixing it. And it could be anywhere from $250.00 to look at it. Sheesh.

This week I was told from wonderful Becky that the school has a recovery program. I looked into it, took the drive to them and they said they were not sure how long it would be before they could look at it. They called me back later that day. They charge $6.00/15 minutes and said it usually takes about an hour...HELLO! I can totally do that. So before they opened up the little demon they talked to me letting me know that the warranty would not be good anymore. Then the helpful guy continues to tell me that if he just writes a letter to the manufacturer letting them know what they are doing, then the warranty will still be good...or something like that. Whatever! It would be way cheaper for me to let them open it, recover the stuff, and ruin my warranty...then buy a completely new one with a different warranty than all of these other ridiculous options! So we'll see what happens, but I am very optimistic, and I love BYU!!!

I Make Dinner on Tuesday

So I am basically the best cook in the world, or at least in my apartment. I cook every Tuesday, so every Tuesday my roommates get to walk into our kitchen full of the delicious aroma of whatever goodness that I happen to be making that week. Some of my roommates make the same thing every week. For instance, I have an pretty amazing roommate Becky who hates cooking and doesn't really know how, so she just makes spaghetti every Thursday. I pretend to like it so she does not feel ashamed at her vastly inferior culinary skills. But in my mind I am just counting the days until the next Tuesday so I can create a new meal filled with deliciousness and simply bursting with flavor. Also, sometimes I make rice krispy treats or banana bread. Becky enjoys those things very much. What will I make next week? Who knows, but rest assured, it will be enjoyed by all.

the mo-tab

This past Thursday me and some of my friends went to Salt Lake to listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice for their Christmas Concert. It was really cool. They sang some really great songs with amazing accompaniment. But then there was this other song that was like an upbeat, jazzersize, folk song! It was so weird, I just didn't think they would sing a song like that. We thought they would be practicing in the Tabernacle, but I guess for Christmas they do it in the Conference Center. So we parked in the wrong place, but it gave us an opportunity to walk around Temple Square and look at all the beautiful lights. I love Christmas time!!

an exciting challenge

One of my cousin's Kim got married about a month ago. She asked me to take pictures of her wedding! I wasn't very confident in my abilities and asked if she was sure she wanted me. She told me it would be cheaper to fly me out east AND pay me instead of paying a professional photographer there! And if I couldn't do it, she would just have her mom take the pictures. So I happily agreed. There has been one mishap after the other trying to get Kim the finished product of her pictures (ie: no more room on my computer so I had to buy an external hard drive...then that hard drive falling over and not working!!) So it has taken me considerably longer than I would have liked to get these pictures ready. But it was really fun, a great experience, and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

i am so cool...

according to my big sister Nicole. She has told me to start a blog for a while now, but I kept on insisting that I had nothing to write about. But really I do. I am going to BYU right now and have a lot going on. I work janitorial work from 4 in the am to 7. That way I can have a job, get a little bit of cash money, and still have my nights free for all that rigorous dating I should be doing (come on guys!!). I recently switched my major to health science, because I want to help people. I love doing photography, so I will hopefully be able to post lots of cool pictures. I am excited about blogging and will do a good job of keeping anyone who's interested (Nicole and fam) updated. I promise.
